Rug Construction Types

• Hand-knotted — Each knot tied individually by an artisan. Quality measured in KPSI (knots per square inch). Museum-grade craft.
• Hand-tufted — Yarn punched through a canvas backing with a tufting gun. Faster than hand-knotted, similar visual result. Standard for premium retail.
• Flat-weave (dhurrie/kilim) — No pile. Reversible. Cotton or wool. Lighter, more casual aesthetic.
• Machine-woven — Loom-produced. Highest volume, lowest cost. Suitable for mass-market retail.
• Hand-loomed — Similar to flat-weave; slight variations due to hand-operation.

KPSI (Hand-Knotted Quality Grading)

• 50–80 KPSI — Entry commercial. Wool pile, simple designs.
